UK Lottery addict jailed

Posted October 2, 2010 – 8:11 pm in: UK lottery

A teenager stole thousands of lottery tickets from a shop where he worked after becoming addicted to gambling on theUK National Lottery! The UK Lottery addict is jailed this week after theft amounting to thousands of pounds in lottery tickets, an action which almost cost the business owners their livelihood. Matthew Lucey from Plymouth, Devon has now been sentenced to eight months in a young offenders institute for his actions after pleading guilty at Plymouth Crown Court.

Sadly whichever lottery in the world we are talking about, there always seems to be stories such as this one. This young man worked in a little village shop and earned just £80 a week yet the court was told he had bought a car and wore designer clothing, flashing his ‘winnings’ around.

However, while all this was happening, he was also fiddling the till in the shop and throwing away the losing lottery tickets. Eventually the shop owners, who couldn’t understand the drop in takings were forced to take out an overdraft as they feared for their business.

However, there really isn’t anything to show for the £13,000 in winnings that Mr Lucey accrued, much of it was frittered away as he became a compulsive gambler. The whole incident took place over 6-10 months and now Mr Lucey will have a few months to consider what he has done. He was eventually caught by a CCTV camera which showed him cheating the till by cancelling parts of purchases, a deceit so complicated he needs paper and a calculator next to the till.

We love writing about lottery winners on the lottery news pages, but this story really doesn’t fill us with the nice warm feeling we usually get!

In other UK National Lottery news, it’s a rollover! This Saturday’s Lotto jackpot is worth an estimated £6.8 million!

Idaho Mega Millions winner comes forward

Posted September 5, 2010 – 8:14 pm in: World Lottery News

After much speculation, the Idaho Mega Millions winner comes forward this week to claim her $190 million share of the $380 rollover jackpot a couple of weeks ago. Speculation had been mounting about the winner, who had failed to come forward despite many appeals by the Mega Millions Lottery. The winner is a female, but does not want to be identified, with Mega Millions officials releasing just her name and the fact that she is from Idaho to world lottery journalists.

Mega Millions officials have named the $190 million winner as single mother of two Ms Lahti who hasn’t yet cashed the ticket, or decided whether she will be taking the cash option or annuity payments. Whichever she chooses, Ms Lahti will not collect the entire $190 million as Mega Millions wins are taxable, however it is a sizeable amount and Ms Lahti is no doubt thrilled at this time.

The $380 million jackpot was the second highest in the history of the Mega Millions Lottery, beaten only by a $390 million jackpot shared in 2007. Ms Lahti won a half share of the jackpot, alongside the McCullar family who have already collected their cheque.

The effect that this jackpot has had on Mega Millions sales has been phenomenal, particularly in Idaho where everyone is hoping that Lady Luck has remained in the state to share around a little more luck!

The next Mega Millions Lottery draw will be held on Friday evening, and the estimated jackpot for that draw is $30 million.

Canada gets excited over Lotto draws

Posted August 20, 2010 – 8:17 pm in: World Lottery News

This week the whole of Canada gets excited over Lotto draws and it’s little wonder as both the Lotto Max and Lotto 6/49 have rolled over, which means there is over $40 million up for grabs this week in the Canadian Lottery draws combined. The end of last year saw some big jackpots in Canada, particularly the $50 million Lotto Max jackpot (which has still not been released) but both Canadian lottery draws are on the climb again and are already attracting the interest of world lottery players too.

First up is Wednesday’s Lotto 6/49 Canada and that one has a massive $7 million jackpot as Saturday’s draw rolled over. Unlike the US lottery draws, the Canada Lotteries are tax-free so this $7 million should be a very appealing sum.

However, the one everyone is waiting for, not just in Canada but around the world too is Friday’s Canada Lotto. This draw hasn’t yet seen a winner in 2011 and this Friday’s jackpot is an estimated $35 million. It means that if no winner is found this week we could be back at deadlock with a $50 million jackpot ceiling, and if that happens, who knows how many millionaires the lottery will see?

We’ll be watching this Lotto Max Canada jackpot closely now until it’s won, as will lottery players from around the world, all hoping to become Canada’s next big tax-free lottery jackpot winner! Make sure you check back to our news pages throughout the week for all the big world lottery stories!
